Landscaping Goats Help City Budget

Published : Thursday, 29 Dec. 2011, 2:43 PM CST

The Wise County City of Newark, about 25 miles northwest of Fort Worth, is saving on landscaping costs by employing goats to eat grass and weeds.

Earlier this month a family donated to the city its five pigmy goats, which are now being used to landscape around city buildings.

The money-saving measure has proven successful, according to Newark Public Works Director Shawn Barlett.

"We try to find any way we can to cut some corners, so having the goats at our well sites and our waste water plant will cut down on our man time that we have to mow and weed-eat," Barlett said. "It just seemed like an easy fix for the situation that we were in."

In fact, Newark may buy more goats, Barlett said.
